The Landsknechte (German "servant of the land") were German-speaking mercenaries that formed the bulk of the Imperial Army (Holy Roman Empire) in the 1400s - 1600s.
The Imperial Landsknechte contributed to many Emperor's victories, including the Battle of Pavia in 1525. At their peak in the early 16th century, the Landsknechte were considered formidable soldiers, brave and loyal. In southern Europe, they were elite troops.
The Landsknechte's clothes impress by splendor and vividness thanks to Archduke Maximilian I von Habsburg, the Holy Roman Emperor, who granted them multiple privilegies.
