‘Giagia’ - My take on Mama Gnoma from Spiramirabilis

This was my first time painting a spira model and found it really enjoyable. I couldn’t help but notice a bit of a resemblance in Lucas’s beautiful sculpt to my Grandma Dionysia, so wanted to paint this as a bit of a tribute to her. I had an old photo of her in front of me the whole time I painted this, and although I did take a few liberties I really hoped to keep a bit of her in the painting I’ve done here.

I love all the character Lucas has sculpted into the owl - and I really enjoy all the versions I’ve seen out there with eyes bulging, being a little bit crushed (with love of course). For mine though I wanted to interpret it as sincerely as possible, so spent a long time on trying to get the eyes right.

I also tried to channel a bit of Marc Masclans energy in the knit pattern on her jumper, it’s my first time attempting anything like it. Still a long, long way to go to get anywhere close to the master - but keen to try the texturing again soon and keep improving.

Hope you like it!
