This isn’t the first miniature I’ve painted, but it is the first in decades. I needed something else creative to do in the UK’s third lockdown during the pandemic. I’m not alone in having painted miniatures as a teenager and then coming back to it later. I didn’t think I’d have any time to invest in painting alongside my other creative projects. However I found it great to simply pick up a mini and add a few dabs. This first piece was a nostalgic Games Workshop, Citadel Ogre I owned in the 80s, which I re-bought from eBay to paint up in a more modern style. This Executioner “Gutlagg” from Citadels C23 range in 1986 is, I think, sculpted by Jes Goodwin (if this isn’t his sculpt let me know). As I worked on the face I was struck by how ‘crocodilian” the teeth were so I referenced crocodiles and began working this in. A story setting started to emerge... I pictured this as scene where he was dropping a bloody skull into the water where it settled amidst the decaying mass of skulls of the previously executed. I then got completely carried away and decided to cut off half the plinth, pile it with skulls and roots and then mask it off to pour in epoxy resin with a little green dye to make this deep-south oldhammer swamp. Need to work on my contrast and blends but I’m reasonably happy with this as my first miniature “decades later”. Let me know what you think? Are you just starting painting, never stopped or also came back decades later? I’ve started work on my next miniature...
