My box art for Neko Galaxy's Kiki.

Very complicated sculpt with tonz of detail - I tried my best to do my storytelling and improve on textures.

Her hood is casted in transparent resin, I decided to leave it unpainted (aside the little violet trim).

Hope you like her :)

You’re a great painter, but i am disapointed by your bronze vote for my last work. I don’t want to do the same thing with you, because i know that’s not a funny thing to see the note go down

    • Natalia Oracz

      Hello, Eric!

I’m an editor and the practice of washing everyone with golds is a well known issue on this site. I try to stay loyal to fair and in fact resonable scoring system, which was created to reflect competitions: there is no points but bronze, silver and gold and on top of that, there is a ‘Props’ button. I judge works here like I judge works on competitions: if I deem the work worthy scoring, I award it with bronze, silver or gold. If it’s on the side of hobby painting, more of a beginner, I give it a ‘props’.
I’m sorry that I’ve hurt your feelings, but I don’t believe in washing everyone with a gold and I don’t expect other people to award my works with gold if they feel that I don’t deserve it. Thank you for not falling into the ‘golden revenge’ loop :D

If we don’t question our skills and abilities, if we prefer to pat ourselves with ‘‘well done’‘s and expect only the highest praise, it’s slowing down our growth.

    • Natalia Oracz

      (continuation of my previous comment)

There are people on this site spamming everyone with a gold score and a ‘Gold’ comments, please don’t expect me to keep breaking Putty&Paint; algorithm in this fashion.

I will go back to your work and write a comment with a small critique/argumentation of my decision. Believe me, it’s not easy to score someone with a Bronze when I can see the ‘plus’ button next to the person’s nick :) And it wasn’t done in a bad spirit because a Bronze is not a bad score - if people were scoring properly, bronze would increase the score. Because of everyone scoring everything with a gold, the algorithm gets broken and a score designed to be a reward becomes an insult.

je suis d’accord avec Natalia, mais je pense que lorsqu’on note bronze, il faut dire pourquoi et donner un avis sur cette notation

I really loved your version! I wish I had it as a reference when I painted mine! I felt like I was a bit lost on how to resolve some parts. The extra textures are superb. Also, its funny how, like me, you also dropped some of the leather strips. Again, amazing work Natalia.

  • Storm "Bunnie" Hajnal

    Stunning work as always
really love the colours youve chosen

    Fine work Natalia.

And yes I agree, the scoring process leaves a lot to be desired and is rather ambiguous at best.  Being an oiler and not a fan of acrylics it’s easy to see our work comparatively will always be in a different class.

I personally prefer a more natural life-like appearance whereas you and other acrylic painters prefer what I would consider a more exaggerated appearance.  There’s nothing wrong either way, just “our” own personal preferences.  You do great work and have a natural talent, that’s obvious, and some of your pieces are astounding.

I would suggest the bronze, silver, and gold ratings be dropped all together.  A bronze could be considered an insult, as some have suggested, whereas a gold just might give someone a bit more confidence than is actually warranted for the work presented.

  • Steven ZuleskiPLUS

I hope I’m making sense here.  I prefer constructive comments vs voting.  I’m not a groupie, so I really don’t care what someone thinks unless they are willing to be constructive in their comments and would impart suggestions as to how one can improve this art form, we call a hobby.  If we’re not learning, what’s the point?

There’s nothing better than “sniffin paint and gluin our fingers together”, because from my perspective, this is not a job, it’s a hobby.

    Cheers, Ski.

      Hello Steven!

Tbh I think that the key issue is not scoring system but the ability to check who scored what by Plus accounts. If the scores were hidden then people wouldn’t feel offended by Bronze scores and wouldn’t feel the need for revenge voting.

    • Natalia Oracz

I understand that people feel bad for getting Bronzes because the algorithm got broken and it’s just the state of today Putty&Paint;. I personally feel tired by the need/demand to explain myself from doing fair voting (I’m giving everyone the competition judging, some people will appreciate, some will despise). Believe me or not, but not showering everyone with automatic Golds takes more time and I try to vote more often on as many entries as I can when I go online. It takes time to write comments, and as you can see, not everyone is happy with my decisions and opinions (scoring done by me is the shortest feedback you can get from me and again, some people will appreciate, some won’t). I’m also a shy person, my energy for giving away feedback gets depleted by my knowledge that some Plus accounts will see my Props, Bronzes and Silvers and probably won’t be happy about them, so sometimes I just chose to do the minimum I can do and keep with only the scores.

    • Natalia Oracz

As for being constructive - I am constructive in my voting, I spend considerable amount of time evaluating pictures (in particular for Bronzes and Silvers) - and it doesn’t matter if the work is fantasy or historical, because besides stronger contrasts/colors and more dramatic lighting, those two genres are the same (oils, arcrylics or paints on the stick). That’s why some people will get Props from me, some Bronzes and some Golds. I may comment or I may not, if you’re curious about the feedback I’m happy to discuss it if I’ll have the time, but I just prefer to usually keep it for people who ask for it (in not toxic way), because not everyone respects it if given for free and in public.

  • Steven ZuleskiPLUS

Well, thanks for the reply, Natalia.  Though I understand your point and agree with some of your comments, we’ll have to agree to disagree agreeably, on others.  We’re good, understood and appreciated.

As for being tired explaining your decision, don’t, let it go. This Sport is too much fun to be bogged down by that.

Keep “sniffin paint and gluin them fingers together”, I say!
