Landsknecht
Landsknecht
Hello party people,

Today I want to show you a historical project I worked on for Monte 2023. It is a beautiful sculpt by Andrea Jula, produced by @pegasomodels

The model is casted in white metal so it is quite heavy, and putting it together was quite a challenge, but thanks to help of my friend Jan Soukup, I managed to clean it and pin it so it holds!

This figure was finished two days before Monte and was done with oils and acrylics combined. I had the idea of the Landsknecht standing in a medieval town and just resting, while the background would provide the atmosphere. I think I managed that. I loved that I could use colours on the Landsknecht and it would be appropriate. In the end, I focused on doing a clean job without anything fancy on this sculpture, as there are some perfect versions by Kiril Kanaev and the boxart by Diego Ruina.

I think I got a little bit better with painting since November, but I wanted to share the figure as it was part of my bronze medal in standard from Monte with The Kiss. Hopefully my next projects will be better as I think I finally learnt how to use a brush :-)

It was a good time painting this and it flexes a different muscles than fantasy painting. I will return to more historical figures for sure. Thank you to Lukas Zaba for help with the oils!

And as always, take care!

    great classic figure !
a bit shy on the contrasts , but very pleasant to watch

    • Štěpán Tichý

You are right. It would benefit from more contrast.Maybe I can add it and refine it a little bit. Thank you for your comment, Marc!

I think you’ve done really well for your first steps into historical display painting. It is indeed a clean paintjob with a good setting of base and daylight ambience. Well done! I think your next big progress goal could be understanding how much light different materials would reflect with and without texture to be able to create areas of textural interest. Well done! Keep on happy painting!

    • Štěpán Tichý

You are completely on point. That is something I want to work on - in a sense of general light behaviour and not painting everything like it is directly under the sun, or rather in an atelier. Thank you for your comment, Roman!

  • Arronaks painters tale
