Alive Day
sculpted & painted
by
Stephen Ward
This figure is a scratchbuilt one, depicting an Iraq war veteran who has lost his legs and one of his arms in the war, holding the Purple Heart medal awarded for those wounds. It's based on a photograph of real Iraq vet Bryan Anderson, a military policeman with the US Army, who lost both legs and an arm in a roadside bomb attack. The cigarettes in the ground are an homage to the real story, in which Anderson kept one arm because had it outside the window of his vehicle, smoking a cigarette, when the roadside bomb went off under his truck.
