Hello everybody!

This is my latest model, recently awarded with a Gold Medal and the “Best of Painting” award at Monte San Savino Show 2019.

It is a rather complex conversion, integrating parts from 7 or 8 different manufacturers. I wanted to create a brand new piece, heavily inspired by the Wagnerian, romantic idea of the Vikings of the XIX century, the idealized image championed by the Götiska Förbundet, a society which promoted the use of Norse mythology as the subject of high art. Other influences came from the Trudvang universe. I envisioned him as an experienced and battle-hardened warrior in a watchful position, spear in hand, as though he was a sentinel protecting the gates of Valhalla.

As regards composition, I decided to add a dwarven totem to the left handside in order to counterbalance the spear, creating a V shape that frames the model well and draws the eye to the face. I painted The Guardian in a similar style to last year’s High King, with acrylics from various brands and only kolinsky brushes, trying to achieve a two-dimensional illustration look. I chose to paint all complements in different shades and hues of purple, violet and amaranth to achieve good chromatic contrast with the very prominent golden parts. I selected teal/turquoise as a harmonizing tertiary colour that would complement the purple well to achieve a colourscheme with a magical aura.

    This is incredible. I love the violets inserted into the NMM. Gives a feeling of mithril, or other fantasy metal. I wish I had the feeling for colour that you do; I think I might have to take a course. I don't have the instinct from birth. :)

    saw this beutifull figure at monte san savino its just superb cant beleive you dont use an airbrush on some application!! for brush painting its ultra smooth also like a lot of painters have your images gone thru photo shop? just wondering?? and like ive said its superb in real, life ultra smooth

      Hi! Thanks for your kind words. Yeah, I don’t use an airbrush at all (other than undercoating) because I never really learned how to use it properly. Too scary to mess up! So I paint with a brush instead. :) And no, the pictures have not been photoshopped in any way (as you’ll know if you saw the piece live at Monte). Only very small adjustments were made like pushing up brightness just a bit due to dark pictures. Many thanks!
