Finally took photos of this one. It has been sitting around a while to piggy back another project. This was a 3 hr sketch, and exercise in pointillism, that is intentionally as coarse as it is. I really like how it came out. Sketches like this are cathartic, and about flow, very enjoyable and oddly, I feel, some of my best results. There must be a joke in there, something about not working long enough to screw it up too badly :D. Only 4 pigments were used as follows, and the colours were not mixed at all.

benzimidazolone yellow - Cold Yellow (KK)
Dizazopyrazolone orange - The Orange - (KK)
Napthol Red - The Red (KK)
Dioxazine violet - Violet (KK)

So really this was an exercise in dot placement and dillution level, to see what I could muster with only 4 pigments used pure (and a tip of white in the yellow of the eyes, just to have slight value difference).

What a fun study! Looks great to me. I feel like I learn so much when I commit to something like this.

Thank you.  I agree completely, you learn and enjoy.  I really like to do this kind of thing with academic Busts as there is no distractions, just simple natural form and paint.

I really like this, so energetic and powerful. Though I’ve given a well deserved gold for the painting, I think the base lets this one down.

    • Kyle Maitland

Thanks Rhett, would you explain what lets you down for the base?  I’ll take it into account the next time I work something like this.  Small and unobtrusive, while carrying the elements of the painting coarser was the intent.

Sure, though this is just my opinion. I think it calls too much attention to itself. The brushwork on the model reminds me of Van Gogh, and the difference between that and base is a bit jarring. Personally I’d put it on a flat black cube and let the painting speak for itself. It’s still a wonderful piece, though.

Thanks Rhett, honestly I really appreciate feedback and criticism.  Thank you for taking the time.
